Pressure switches for machinery and plant engineering

In machinery and plant engineering, pneumatic and hydraulic systems determine whether something moves, clamps, or is released. Our pressure switches monitor minimum and maximum values and provide the control system with a clear signal: enable or shut down. Whether a filling system stays in sync or a robot area may be entered depends on this single decision—and on how quickly it is made.

Application Case 01

Filling systems for bulk solids – bag detection before filling

Before a filling system feeds bulk solids into a bag, it must know whether a bag is actually attached to the filling spout. This is done with compressed air: if pressure builds up, the bag is in place and our pressure switch enables filling. If pressure does not build up, the system blocks. Because cycle time depends on it, the key factors here are fast response time, precise switch points in the low-pressure range, and an M12x1 connector with IP67.

Application Case 02

Robot lines – safety enable via pressure monitoring

In a robot line, no one may enter the enclosure as long as movement is still possible. Whether this is the case is indicated by the line pressure: only when it falls below the defined threshold, typically 200 mbar, does the control system release the access door. Our pressure switch provides the signal for this—quickly and reliably. Its response time affects both: employee safety and system availability.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

In machines and systems, pressure switches often perform simple but safety- or process-critical monitoring tasks. They detect whether a defined pressure is reached, undershot, or exceeded, and then provide an electrical switching signal to the control system. Depending on the application, this can be used, for example, to enable a process step, trigger a warning, or stop a machine. Mechanical pressure switches are particularly interesting when a robust and direct switching function is required.

Not only the actual switching point, but also the reset point influences a machine’s behavior. If the hysteresis is too small, the switch may toggle repeatedly when pressure fluctuates. If it is too large, the reset may occur later than desired for the process. That is why we always consider switch point, switching direction, and reset behavior together with the specific application, and we generally set the switch at the factory according to the customer’s specification.

Especially in machinery engineering, installation conditions vary widely. That is why different pressure connections, electrical interfaces, cable outlets, and housing versions are available. Switch point, switching direction and—depending on the series—reset behavior can also be adapted to the application. This often allows a pressure switch to be integrated into an existing design without having to fundamentally modify the machine.

For selection, in addition to the required switch point, operating and maximum pressure, possible pressure peaks, switching direction, and the medium are particularly relevant. In addition, temperature range, installation situation, pressure connection, electrical load, and the desired connection type must be considered. The required function within the process is also important: is only a minimum pressure to be monitored, is an enable signal required, or should a machine shut down at a specific pressure condition? The more precisely we understand the function, the more specifically we can select the right version.
